Unclaimed Property

According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, 1 in 10 has unclaimed property, and over $3 billion is returned each year. Unclaimed property can include uncashed paychecks, checking and savings accounts, stock, safety deposit box contents, insurance payments, etc.

To search for your unclaimed property, follow these steps:

  1. Access the website: https://unclaimed.org/search/
  2. Select your state, and the website will direct you to the state search
  3. Enter your name and review the list of possible matches
  4. If you find any unclaimed property, follow the directions to make a claim.

Retirement Benefits

Pensions

Another type of unclaimed property is defined benefit pensions. Across the country, there are more than 80,000 people who have not claimed their benefit. If you are looking for a pension, you can contact the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation:

You will need to provide your name, social security number, mailing address, phone numbers and company names and dates you worked there.

Retirement Plan Accounts

The National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits is another place to check for lost or forgotten retirement funds. If you think you might be missing an account, you can check out their website: https://unclaimedretirementbenefits.com/. You will need to search by using your social security number. There is no cost to the search the registry.

There may be tax consequences if you find any retirement benefits. Make sure to contact your advisor to ensure they are appropriately handled.
